Lauterbrunnen is the quintessential Swiss village in a 300-metre steep sided glacier gouged U shaped valley. From the many glaciers and water springs from the surrounding Jungfrau and Schilthorn mountains of this Berner Oberland region of Switzerland, waters gush year round into this magical Lauterbrunnen valley.
Around 1911, a young man wandered along this deep sided valley. So deep that the steep rugged stone walls made the blue sky look like a narrow lane. He heard the gushing sounds of water all around him, and was reminded of Johann Wolfgang von Göthes poem of 1779‚“Gesang der Geister über den Wassern“. His name was J.R.R. Tolkien.
These travels in Lauterbrunnen with his comrades into the secret side valleys ending in glaciers and gurgling icy waters would inspire him to create Rivendell. A most beautiful place in Middle Earth in his epic saga „Lord of the Rings“. Also known as Imladris, Rivendell was an Elven town and described as "The Last Homely House East of the Sea", a secret valley accessed by a steep. slippery zig zagged path. Lauterbrunnen, the peaceful, sheltered town was a place of rest at the edge of a narrow gorge of the river“ Bruinen“ but well hidden in the moorlands and foothills of the Misty Mountains.
Sometimes the mist drifts down into this majestic valley of 72 waterfalls, each with their high sources and craggy valleys. Rivendell means „Deeply cloven valley“ and the 300m rocky cliffs of the Lauterbrunnen valley portray Rivendell in a believable way.
The Weiße Lütchine river hurrying through the valley of Lauterbrunnen can reliably be the source for Rivendell’s river with its English and Elvish names, of Loudwater and Bruinen. Indeed the town’s name, „Lauterbrunnen“ itself is a description of the waters; „Lauter“ coming from the ancient word „pure“ and „brunnen“ describes „fountain waters“. After refreshing spring rain, one can see extra fountains bursting out from the stoney cliffs, sourced from the glaciers and high underground streams.
Although the 297 meter Staubbachfall is opposite the holiday apartment, there are other beautiful waterfalls to experience in this Jungfrau region. A 20 minute walk to the Trummelbachfalls hidden inside the massive mountain will leave a memorable roar in your ears of water from melting glaciers.
The Murrenbachfall 417 meters high near the Schilthorn Cable Car station will entice you to come closer to its impact zone. Or gaze up at the forgotten but impressive 840m high Mattenbach falls opposite.
You will feel alive standing behind the rarely visited Sprutzfall as they tumble down in front of you.
Another almost unknown beauty are the 270 metre Schmadribachfalls that will impress you with their grandeur. They seem to hurtle at you as you walk up the steep path beside them on a beautiful 11.2 km (7 miles) round walk. This overlooked Jungfrau UNESCO World Heritage steep trail will take you past the remains of the Trachsellauenen Silvermine, via hidden alpine pastures and through quiet mountain forests.
Stages 11 and 12 of the famous 390 km Via Alpina 20 day hiking trail pass through Lauterbrunnen with highlights including Grindelwald and the Kleine Scheidegg view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.
One is never far from the busy, rushing sounds of water on a walk through this valley. From the balcony of the Holiday apartment you can see and hear gurgling, spluttering and busy water. So relaxing. The 1 bedroom apartment is a convenient base to explore both mountain walking paths either side of the valley as well as Grindlewald in the next valley. Of course in winter it is a playground of three snow fields.
When describing Bilbo’s reaction to the Last Homely House, Tolkien writes: “Bilbo would gladly have stopped there for ever and ever…” Which, eventually, Bilbo does, after he leaves the Shire in “Lord of the Rings.” Most visitors to this beautiful valley feel the same.
